Trenton's Chris Gittens Wins MVP Award

Scarborough, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Chris Gittens of the Trenton Thunder has been selected as the winner of the 2019 Eastern League Most Valuable Player Award. Gittens is hitting .279 (107-for-384) with 16 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, 75 RBIs, 55 runs scored, a .497 slugging percentage, and a .392 on-base percentage in 111 games for the Thunder this season. Chris' performance helped the Thunder clinch a playoff berth by finishing in first place in the Eastern Division during the first half of the season. Trenton is also currently three games behind Reading for first place in the Eastern Division second half standings.
The 25-year old is in position to lead the league in two of the three Eastern League Triple Crown categories, as he is leading the league in home runs (22) and RBIs (75). He also leads the league in on-base percentage (.392), slugging percentage (.497), and OPS (.889) while also ranking among the league leaders in walks (69-2nd), total bases (191-tied 4th), and batting average (.279-5th).
The 6'4", 250 lb. slugger was selected as the first baseman on the recently announced Eastern League All-Star Team and was the starting first baseman for the Eastern Division at the 2019 Eastern League All-Star Game in Richmond. He was also selected as the "Best Defensive First Baseman" in the Eastern League this season in Baseball America's Best Tools rankings.
Chris, who is a native of Sherman, Texas, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 12th round of the 2014 draft out of Grayson Junior College in Denison, Texas.
Reading Fightin Phils first baseman Darick Hall finished second in the voting for the award, and Portland Sea Dogs infielder Bobby Dalbec finished in third place. This award was voted on by Eastern League managers, broadcasters, and members of the media.
