PENSACOLA, Fla. - Pensacola's offense powered past the Shrimp 5-1 in front of a sellout crowd at Blue Wahoos Stadium as the Wahoos secured their fifth straight win.
Starter Daniel Wright (W, 5-6) had a superb start for the Wahoos. The right-hander pitched a season-high eight shutout innings and allowed only six hits, two walks, and struck out three. Wright has been dominant at home this year with a 2.32 ERA. Since June 14th Wright is 3-2 and has allowed only 10 earned runs over 42.2 innings pitched.
The Wahoos turned up the heat by scoring in four of the game's first five innings. Wright did a little bit of everything on Saturday, which included an RBI single in the second inning to put the Wahoos up 1-0. In the bottom of the third, Jose Siri who has been outstanding in this series, belted his ninth homer of the season (his fourth home run in the series) to make the score 2-0. Taylor Sparks would smash another homer in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 3-0. Pensacola's final score of the game would come from an Aristides Aquino double that plated home, TJ Friedl and Shed Long, to make the score 5-0.
Peter O'Brien put the Jumbo Shrimp on the board when he smashed a homer against reliever Nick Howard, who was making his Double-A debut for the Wahoos. Howard struggled and was pulled for Rafael De Paula (S, 3) after Howard walked Justin Twine to put runners on first and second base with only one out. De Paula took home the save after he retired the next two batters he faced to close out the game.
The Wahoos will look for their first sweep this season in Sunday night's finale. Former Blue Wahoos pitcher Rookie Davis will start for the Wahoos as part of an MLB rehab assignment. He will be opposed by RHP Kolton Mahoney (3-4, 3.77). Sunday's game can be found on the radio at 97.1 The Ticket/1490 AM Milton, BlabTV, and www.bluewahoos.com. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
