Norfolk Tides Reading Program

Each year, along with our partners at Elizabeth River Crossings, the Norfolk Tides are thrilled to promote reading within our community's schools. The goal of the program is to encourage students to read and to understand why reading is so important for their future. Together, Elizabeth River Crossings and the Tides offer incentives to encourage children and their families to participate.

Annually, the Tides Community Relations Department reaches out to all of the school reading specialists in Hampton Roads. Each school reading specialist and/or teacher can then choose a month for their students to participate. During this time, students will write down every book they read on a reading log provided by the Tides. Prizes and incentives are categorized by age/grade level and communicated to the reading specialist/teachers to encourage participation.

At the conclusion of the program, students who participate and complete the program receive a special bookmark that gives them tickets to Tides games in May, June, July, and August. Plus, the classroom that reads the most books of any classroom in the same age group will earn a pizza party with Rip Tide or Triton. Since parent and guardian encouragement is an important part of this program, the Tides and Elizabeth Rvier Crossings also offer one free adult ticket (included on the bookmark) along with discounted tickets to attend games with their child(ren).

Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC) is committed to connecting our community's youth with impactful educational programs. Through our continued partnership with the Tides this season, we are able to provide local students with the Reading Program and the Batter Up Statistics Program. These initiatives promote reading and mathematics for all ages within our community's schools and offer incentives for students who complete them. We are excited for another year of partnering with the Tides and look forward to seeing the impact!
