Brusdar Graterol had his most dominating performance so far this season for the Blue Wahoos, but it wasn't enough to propel Pensacola past the Biloxi Shuckers on Tuesday evening.
The 20-year-old flame-throwing right-hander, who has wowed with his 100-plus mph fastball, allowed just one hit over sevin innings, but the Blue Wahoos sustained a hard-luck, 3-2 loss in 10 innings at MGM Park in Biloxi.
Graterol, the top pitching prospect Minnesota Twins organization, had eight strikeouts, allowed just one walk and faced only two batters above the minimum in his brilliant outing.
The game was scoreless through nine innings. Each team had just one hit until the eventful 10th.
In the top of the 10th, the Blue Wahoos (8-4) had put themselves in great position for another road win. With pace-of-play runner Tanner English starting on second base in the MiLB extra-inning format, Brian Schales was hit by a pitch. Mitchell Kranson bunted both runners into scoring position.
Jimmy Kerrigan was intentionally walked to load the bases. With one out, a catcher's interference call allowed Ernie De La Trinidad to reach first, scoring English. Caleb Hamilton then followed with a RBI single.
But when Taylor Grzelakowski hit into a bases-loaded double play to end the inning, it proved pivotal. It was the third double play the Blue Wahoos hit into during the game.
The Shuckers' Dillon Thomas started the rally against Blue Wahoos reliever Cody Stashak with a run-scoring triple, scoring Biloxi's pace-of-play runner to cut Pensacola's lead to 2-1. Weston Wilson followed with a game-tying double. After Tyler Jay replaced Stashak, a passed ball ensued after striking out Patrick Leonard sending Wilson to third. Luis Aviles Jr. then hit a one-out sacrifice fly to right field that scored Wilson with the winning run.
It was the Blue Wahoos third extra-inning game this season and second time they experienced a walk-off loss.
The Blue Wahoos Luis Arraez had two hits in the game to raise his average to .356. The Shuckers (6-6) will host the Blue Wahoos on Wednesday through Friday to finish the series.
