Sea Dogs split doubleheader with Somerset

Portland wins game one 5-3, fall 11-3 in game two

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (25-18) split a doubleheader with the Somerset Patriots (28-15) Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (25-18) split a doubleheader with the Somerset Patriots (28-15) Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs remain three games behind the Patriots for first place in the Double-A Northeast League Northeast Division. The Sea Dogs defeated the Patriots 5-3 in Game One and fell 11-3 in Game Two.

In game one Josh Winckowski struck out nine batters and Tate Matheny hit a two-run homer leading the Sea Dogs to a 5-3 victory.

Devlin Grandberg and Hudson Potts hit back-to-back singles to lead-off the bottom of the second. Granberg stole third, his first stolen base since joining the Sea Dogs and second of the season, and scored on a wild pitch by Luis Medina as the Sea Dogs took a 1-0 lead.

Somerset scored a pair or runs in the third inning on an Oswald Peraza two run double off Josh Winckowski.

Michael Beltre extended the Somerset led to 3-1 in the fourth inning with a solo home run.

The Portland Sea Dogs scored four times in the bottom of the fifth. Tate Matheny’s fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot tied the game. Triston Casas singled and Grandberg doubled. Casas scored on another wild pitch from Medina. Addison Russ relieved Medina tossing Somerset’s third wild pitch of the game allowing Grandberg to score giving Portland the 5-3 lead.

Winckowski (3-1) earned the win tossing five innings allowing three runs n seven hits, striking out nine and did not walk a batter. Medina (0-1) took the loss.

Durbin Feltman picked-up his first save of the season working a scoreless ninth with two punch outs.

The Sea Dogs stole a season high three bases in the game.

In game two, Yankees prospect Ken Waldichuk took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Patriots. Waldichuk making his second start for Somerset after being called up from High-A Hudson Valley tied a career high with ten strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. The 23-year-old was drafted by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2019 draft and is ranked as the No. 27 prospect by MLB Pipeline in the Yankees organization.

Hudson Potts broke up the no-hitter in the sixth with a single to leftfield. Matheny followed with his second home run of the night ending the shutout and the night for Waldichuk. Reliever Zach Green was greeted by Ryan Fitzgerald who homered to rightfield for back-to-back homers as the Sea Dogs scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Patriots provided plenty of offense for Waldichuk scoring six runs on six hits in the third inning and five runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Beltre led the Patriots offensive attack with a 2-for-4 performance with a triple, two runs scored, and three RBI’s.

Waldichuck (1-0) earned his first Double-A win. While Enmanuel De Jesus (2-2) took the loss for Portland.

Rio Gomez tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs and Patriots will continue the series Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Righty Brayan Bello (0-0, 1.93) will get the start for Portland. He will be opposed by lefty JP Sears (3-0, 1.98).
