Akron's Mike Papi slugged a three-run home run, and lefty Luis Lugo claimed his third win of the season, as the RubberDucks slipped by the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 7-5, Wednesday afternoon at Canal Park.
Papi belted a three-run shot to right field in the fourth inning against Richmond starter Matt Lujan (1-3). It was Papi's fourth of the year, and gave the RubberDucks a 6-1 lead at the time. Mark Mathias singled, and Todd Hankins doubled leading up to Papi's dinger.
Lugo (3-1) threw five innings to claim his third win of the year. He breezed through the first four innings before giving up four runs in the fifth. Overall, he allowed five runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one. Lugo turned a 6-5 lead over to the bullpen, and Mitch Brown and Robbie Aviles responded with shutout relief. Brown chipped in three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit. Aviles turned in a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.
Papi, a left-handed hitter, is hitting a blistering .361 against left-handed pitching. Three of his four homers have come against southpaws, including his three-run shot Wednesday. Yu Chang drilled his seventh homer of the year, most on the team. His solo shot off Lujan in the third inning gave the Ducks a 3-1 lead. Joe Sever had a pair of RBI for the RubberDucks (17-18). He slapped an RBI single in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Dorssys Paulino reached base four times, knocking a pair of singles and drawing two walks.
The RubberDucks took two of three from the Flying Squirrels (16-22)…Lujan allowed six runs in 3.1 innings to absorb the loss…Akron, ranked third in the EL for team defense, committed a pair of errors in Richmond's four-run fifth.…First baseman Bobby Bradley sat out the game with an injured right middle finger…Time of Game: 2:31 …Attendance: 8,060.
The RubberDucks are off Thursday, but will begin a seven-game road trip on Friday night at 7:05, with the first of three games at Hartford against the Yard Goats. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM, the WARF iHeart channel, and the TuneIn Radio App.
