Too Much: Homers Sink RailRiders Under Tides

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Norfolk Tides 8-4 in Friday night’s contest. Franchy Cordero homered in a three RBI performance.

In the top of the third, Terrin Vavra hit his first home run with the Tides driving in José Godoy and giving Norfolk a 2-0 advantage.

Joey Ortiz doubled to lead off the top of the fourth and came around on an RBI single from Lewin Diaz. Godoy drove him in with a two-run shot, his first with the Orioles, to bring the Tides lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Rodolfo Durán singled to left field and was brought home when Franchy Cordero smashed a home run to the batter’s eye. The 417-foot shot made it a 5-2 ballgame in favor of Norfolk.

Connor Norby led off the top of the fifth with a solo shot making it a 6-2 lead for the Tides.

Andrés Chaparro began off the bottom of the sixth with a double and advanced on another single from Durán. Chapparo scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Cordero and the RailRiders cut into the Tides lead making it 6-3.

In the top of the seventh, Heston Kjerstad hit an inside-the-park home run, his first home run at the Triple-A level, to make it 7-3 Norfolk. Jordan Westburg smacked his 16th home run of the season in the top of the ninth with a solo shot to expand the Tides lead to 8-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jesús Bastidas smoked his first triple of the season and Estevan Florial drew a walk. With runners on the corners, an RBI single from Oswald Peraza brought Bastidas home to make it 8-4 still in favor of Norfolk.

Jhony Brito (L, 1-1) pitched 5.1 innings for the RailRiders allowing six runs on seven hits while fanning four. Michael Feliz went 1.2 innings allowing just a run and striking out three. Deivi García tossed two frames, giving up a run and tallying a pair of strikeouts.

Grayson Rodriguez (W, 2-0) started and pitched six innings for Norfolk allowing three runs on seven hits with a season-high ten strikeouts. Easton Lucas tossed two scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut. Logan Gillaspie would allow a run in an inning of work to finish the contest.

Right hander Will Warren is slated to take first pitch for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at 4:05 PM in game one of the doubleheader.
