On a wild Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, the Biloxi Shuckers (9-4) saw a pair of leads disappear in a 6-5 loss against the Mobile BayBears (6-6). It is the first time this season the Shuckers have lost back-to-back games.
Biloxi scored in the top of the first on three fly ball singles and a throwing error, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. The BayBears responded quickly, going ahead on a Hutton Moyer two-run homer, his league-leading sixth of the season.
BayBears starter Jose Suarez kept the Shuckers bats in check in the second and third, striking out six of seven batters faced. Biloxi put together a set of patient at bats in the fourth and chased Suarez when Dylan Moore singled, Jake Hager doubled and Wendell Rijo drove in a run on a groundout, bringing the game even at 2-2. Suarez struck out nine Shuckers in total.
In the fifth, the Shuckers scored three runs on just one hit, drawing five walks against RHP Sean Isaac to take a 5-2 lead. Mobile would tie the game in the bottom of the frame on a three-run homer by Matt Thaiss, his second of the season.
Reliever Josh Uhen (L, 0-1) entered the game in the sixth and allowed the first two batters to reach on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. The right-hander induced a lineout to hold the runners in place, and appeared to have the second out before catcher's interference was called, loading the bases. Uhen then plunked the nine-hole hitter, Wade Wass, with a pitch, forcing in a run to give the BayBears a 6-5 lead. LHP Quintin Torres-Costa was summoned from the bullpen and promptly induced a 1-2-3 double play, ending the frame. RHP Ryan Clark (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief for Mobile.
The Shuckers best chance to tie the game came in the eighth. Corey Ray started the inning with a single, but turned into the second out when Lucas Erceg grounded into a double play. BayBears reliever Jake Jewell (S, 2) picked up his second save of the season, tossing 2.0 innings and allowing just one hit.
Game four of a five-game series is on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. The Shuckers are scheduled to send RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 9.00) to the mound, while the BayBears are slated to start RHP Jesus Castillo (0-0, 9.00). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM 1240 AM/ FM 100.9, the MiLB First Pitch or TuneIn Radio.
