Zack Erwin delivered a quality start on Monday and Kyle Nowlin gave him all the run support he required in the Snappers 3-1 win over the Kane County Cougars. Beloit halted a season-long six-game losing streak and avoided being swept at home in a four-game series for the first time since the 2011 season.
Nowlin plated the first run of the game on a single in the first inning. Mike Martin was the runner who reached third base after a walk, error, and wild pitch. Luke Persico positioned himself in scoring position for Nowlin in the sixth with a leadoff single and stolen base followed by the RBI double by the Snappers designated hitter. Eric Mariñez singled home Nowlin with two outs in the inning and give the Snappers an extra run. Martin, Nowlin, and Marinez all had three hits.
Erwin hurled six scoreless frames with a career-best eight strikeouts in his longest scoreless outing of the year. At one point, Erwin retired seven straight batters and walked only one Cougars hitter. John Gorman relieved Erwin and retired his first seven batters before a ninth inning single by Mark Karaviotis, the first baserunner to get aboard on Gorman in four outings with the Snappers. The Cougars spoiled the shutout on a two-out single in the ninth by Luis Silverio scoring Karaviotis against Yordys Alejo. Kane County starter Ryan Atkinson struck out nine Snappers in a losing effort.
