Second baseman Jesus Lopez's one-out error in the fifth inning proved decisive on Friday night, as the Snappers fell to Lansing, 3-2. The miscue led to two unearned runs against Matt Milburn, who continued his second half dominance in spite of the loss. Milburn now holds a 1.45 ERA in 31 innings over five starts since the All-Star break.
After Milburn and Lugnuts starter Yennsy Diaz exchanged zeros through the first three innings, Jason Goldstein put Beloit on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. Lansing answered in the fifth, however. Mattingly Romanin plated Yeltsin Gudino, who had reached on Lopez's error one batter prior, with a double to knot the game at 1-1. Javier Hernandez's RBI single put the Lugnuts ahead, but right fielder Luke Persico nailed Hernandez at second when he tried to stretch a double, preventing further damage.
Miguel Mercedes' team-leading 13th home run of the season tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the sixth. An Edward Olivares solo shot in the bottom of the frame gave the Lugnuts a lead they would not relinquish, however. The Olivares bomb was the only earned run on Milburn's ledger, as he finished with six innings, walking none and striking out four.
Eric Mariñez went 2-for-3 with two walks, recording the only Snappers multi-hit performance on Friday, although the shortstop committed his 20th error of the season in the field. After falling a homer shy of the cycle the previous two nights, Trace Loehr returned to earth with a 1-for-4 effort.
