Beloit 3 Cedar Rapids 0 - Monday
WP: Martinez (5-10)
LP: Beardsley (4-7)
S: Zambrano (4)
Seth Martinez twirled seven scoreless innings on 86 pitches to lead the Snappers 3-0 shutout win over Cedar Rapids in the 2017 season finale at Pohlman Field. The Kernels scattered six hits on Martinez while he struck out a half dozen as just the sixth time a Snappers starter lasted seven innings. The final game of the season took just two hours to play, the quickest game of the season. Beloit finished the season 65-73 and 33-36 in the second half to finish fourth in the Western Division in each half of the season with a fifth-place finish in the overall standings.
Mike Martin needed a pair of hits to finish the year with a .300 batting average and he recorded two singles to left field in his first two at-bats. He struck out in his final plate appearance to finish 2-for-3 and an even .300 average to lead all Snappers in hitting this year. Martin scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch by Kernels starter Tyler Beardsley with two outs in the first to give Martinez all the run support he needed.
Holding a 1-0 advantage all afternoon, the Snappers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Jason Goldstein and Trace Loehr connected back-to-back singles with one out as Luke Persico pinch-hit for Martin to preserve his .300 season. Persico flew out to right field for a sacrifice fly that plated Goldstein followed by an RBI single by JaVon Shelby. Snappers reliever Jesus Zambrano finished Beloit's 12th shutout of the season with two perfect innings and three strikeouts.
