Ramirez and Rice Homer Again, But Patriots Drop Third Straight

The Somerset Patriots were defeated by the Hartford Yard Goats on Wednesday night by a final score of 6-5 at TD Bank Ballpark. Despite trailing the Yard Goats by as much as 5-1, the Patriots went on to score in five separate innings and managed to get the tying run

The Somerset Patriots were defeated by the Hartford Yard Goats on Wednesday night by a final score of 6-5 at TD Bank Ballpark.

Despite trailing the Yard Goats by as much as 5-1, the Patriots went on to score in five separate innings and managed to get the tying run either on base or at the plate in each of the last four innings of the game.

Now on a season-high three-game losing streak, the Patriots fall to a season-low three games under .500. Through the first two games of in the series, the Patriots pitching staff has combined to strike out 24 batters.

The game marked the second time this season that catchers Agustin Ramirez and Ben Rice both homered in the same game (4/5 vs. RIC).

RHP Zach Messinger (5.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) was tagged with his first loss of the season, despite allowing two unearned runs.

RHP Matt Givin (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) made his Double-A debut for the Patriots and struck out five batters, the most by any Somerset reliever in a game this season.

RHP Carlos Gomez (1.0 IP, HB, K) pitched a scoreless ninth frame, extending his four-game scoreless streak to start the season to a team-best 6.0 innings.

DH Agustin Ramirez (1-for-4, RBI, R, HR, BB) brought home the Patriots’ first run of the game with a solo home run in the third inning.

The homer signaled Ramirez’s seventh out of 10 games to start the season, continuing to lead the Eastern League with that total.

Now with 14 RBIs through 10 games, Ramirez has collected RBIs in eight out of 10 games this season and continues to tie the Eastern League lead with that mark.

In addition to leading the Eastern League in HR and RBI, Ramirez ends the night as the Eastern League leader in SLG (.795), TB (31), XBH (7, T-1st), R (10, T-1st) and his 1.178 OPS ranks second.

C Ben Rice (3-for-5, 2 RBI, R, HR, K) accomplished his first three-hit game of the season and hit his second home run of the year.

Rice brought home the Patriots’ final two runs of the game, including a two-out, two-strike RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning that extended the game.
