Sounds Bested By Dodgers In Series Opener
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Sounds saw their early lead go by the wayside as the Dodgers put four up in the sixth and Oklahoma City stole the series opener at First Tennessee Park on Monday night, 6-2.
Nashville collected 10 hits but was just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and fell to 7-6 on the season.
Joey Wendle got it all started by using the favorable right-field dimensions to his advantage. The second baseman blasted the first home run in the park's history to give the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first. The solo blast was Wendle's third of the season.
The Dodgers quickly evened things up in the third with a Scott Schebler solo homer to the grass berm in left, but the Sounds regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Wendle singled, moved to second on a passed ball and plated on a Max Muncy single. Muncy's eighth RBI of the season put Nashville up 2-1.
Oklahoma City refused to give in and busted out a four-run sixth inning that was capped by a Kike Hernandez two-RBI double. The visitors grabbed the 5-2 lead, added another tally in the seventh and improved to 10-3 on the season.
Angel Castro was efficient through the first five innings for Nashville but hit a bumpy patch in the sixth. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and dropped to 0-1 on the season.
Kent Matthes extended his team-best hitting streak to six games with a single to lead off the second and then furthered his extra-base hit streak (four games) with a double in the sixth. The outfielder pushed his average up to .341.
The Sounds and Dodgers clash again tomorrow night at First Tennessee Park kicking off at 7:05 p.m. Right-handers Arnold Leon (0-0, 7.56) and Zach Lee will be the featured pitching matchup on Wednesday night.
