Cardinals come back for 2-1 win in San Antonio

April 7, 2013

San Antonio, TX - The Springfield Cardinals struck in the sixth and seventh innings, coming back for the 2-1 win against the San Antonio Missions before 3,009 fans at Wolff Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After RHP Boone Whiting (W, 1-0) retired the first 10 batters of the game, the Missions (2-2) struck for their lone run in the bottom of the fourth.  With two down and the bases empty, LF Justin Miller reached first on a single, before swiping his way to second.  1B Tommy Medica followed with an RBI base hit, lifting San Antonio in front, 1-0.

Whiting kept it just a one-run game until the Cardinals (2-2) got the bats going in the top of the sixth against RHP Ryan Kelly (L, 0-1).  CF Tommy Pham led off with a triple to right field and then trotted home on an RBI double by 3B Ruben Gotay, squaring the score at 1-1.

Springfield pounced on Kelly again in the top of the seventh.  After SS Luis Mateo led off with a double, 2B Neal Pritchard moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt.  Chris Swauger then entered the game as a pinch hitter and ripped the first pitch of his at-bat down the right-field line for a go-ahead RBI double, making it 2-1.

The Cardinals receive a scoreless relief inning apiece from RHP Deryk Hooker, RHP Michael Blazek and RHP Keith Butler (S, 2), closing the 2-1 victory.  Missions starter RHP Matt Andriese tossed five scoreless innings in the no-decision.
