Cardinals come back for 5-3 win against Tulsa

May 4, 2013

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals came from behind for the 5-3 win against the Tulsa Drillers, before 3,798 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday night. St. Louis 1B Matt Adams joined the Cardinals for a rehab start and will be with Springfield again on Sunday with a 6:39pm First Pitch.

The Drillers (14-14) took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first against RHP Richard Castillo and the Cardinals (14-13). CF Delta Cleary, Jr. led off the inning with a ground ball single to center. SS Cristhian Adames followed with a bunt to the third base side. 3B Ruben Gotay tried to fire it to first, but threw wide of the bag, enabling Cleary, Jr. to score and Adames to reach third. One out later, RF Kyle Parker drove an RBI base hit to center, stretching the early lead to 2-0.

Tulsa tacked on an additional run in the top of the sixth. Parker led off the inning with a solo homer to right field, making it a 3-0 advantage for the Drillers.

The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Dan Houston. With two away, CF Tommy Pham kept the inning alive with a base hit to center, before racing to second on a pitch in the dirt. Gotay then connected for an RBI double to right-center field, bringing the Cardinals within two runs, 3-1.

Springfield catapulted in front with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one on and two down, SS Jake Lemmerman ripped an RBI single to center field, scoring RF Chris Swauger from third. 1B Xavier Scruggs followed with a bullet of a two-run homer over the left field wall, swinging Springfield in front, 4-3. LF Mike O'Neill kept the inning going with his second walk of the game and then quickly swiped second base. Pham then pulled an RBI single to left, plating O'Neill for the 5-3 advantage.

After RHP Kevin Thomas (W, 1-0) dealt a 1-2-3 seventh, LHP Kevin Siegrist and RHP Michael Blazek (S, 5) each provided a perfect relief inning apiece, closing the 5-3 win for the Cardinals.
