With SS Matt Williams on at second base and two outs, LF Mike O'Neill extended the inning with a free pass. CF Rafael Ortega then swung the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single to right-center, scoring Williams for the 1-0 lead.

Wright followed Petrick with a scoreless sixth, before Donofrio struck out four batters in a row through 1.1 perfect innings. Kiekhefer logged an out in the eighth, and then RHP Ronnie Shaban (S, 1) slammed the door by retiring four in a row to close the 1-0 win.
