Cardinals shut out Missions, 1-0

April 4, 2014

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals blanked the San Antonio Missions, 1-0, for their first shutout win of the season before 2,847 fans at Hammons Field on Friday. RHP Zach Petrick, LHP Justin Wright, RHP Joey Donofrio, LHP Dean Kiekhefer and RHP Ronnie Shaban combined to deal the shutout.

After Petrick (W, 1-0) and San Antonio RHP Josh Geer (L, 0-1) alternated a pair of scoreless innings, the Cardinals (1-1) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. With SS Matt Williams on at second base and two outs, LF Mike O'Neill extended the inning with a free pass. CF Rafael Ortega then swung the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single to right-center, scoring Williams for the 1-0 lead.

Petrick kept the Cardinals advantage intact throughout the remainder of his outing, striking out seven through 5.0 scoreless innings and yielding only two hits.

Wright followed Petrick with a scoreless sixth, before Donofrio struck out four batters in a row through 1.1 perfect innings. Kiekhefer logged an out in the eighth, and then RHP Ronnie Shaban (S, 1) slammed the door by retiring four in a row to close the 1-0 win.
