Drillers edge Cardinals, 4-3, in 10 innings

June 15, 2014

Tulsa, OK - One night after walking off in the 10th inning at Hammons Field, the Springfield Cardinals were edged in the 10th, 4-3, by the Tulsa Drillers before 5,373 fans at ONEOK Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Drillers (38-30) cracked the scoreless tie with an unearned run against RHP Sam Gaviglio in the bottom of the first inning. 2B Taylor Featherston led off by reaching on a throwing error, before racing to second on a single by 3B Joey Wong. A sacrifice bunt from SS Cristhian Adames advanced both runners to second and third. Gaviglio struck out 1B Ryan Casteel, but a wild pitch during LF Brian Humphries' at-bat enabled Featherston to dart home for the 1-0 lead.

Gaviglio and RHP Jonathan Gray dueled again, alternating scoreless frame after scoreless frame to keep it just a 1-0 lead for Tulsa. Gray ended up with five scoreless innings for the Drillers, while Gaviglio made it through his first five with only the one unearned run.

Tulsa, though, added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at first and second and one away, 1B Ryan Casteel ripped an RBI double inside the left field line that scored 3B Joey Wong and moved SS Cristhian Adames to third. Adames then charged home on a wild pitch from Gaviglio, making it 3-0.

The Cardinals (33-36) started the comeback right away in the top of the seventh against LHP Ken Roberts. With one away, DH Aledmys Diaz knocked a pinch-hit single to left field to reach base. LF Mike O'Neill singled Diaz to second base, before 2B Jacob Wilson scorched an RBI double to left field, scoring Diaz to get the Cardinals on the board, 3-1.

Springfield completed the comeback in the very next inning against LHP Kraig Sitton. 3B Patrick Wisdom and RF Starlin Rodriguez sparked the charge with consecutive singles to start the stanza. A SS Matt Williams sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, before a passed ball charged to C Jose Gonzalez enabled Wisdom to race home and Rodriguez to take third. C Travis Tartamella worked a walk, putting runners at the corners for pinch-hitting 1B Curt Smith. Smith laced an RBI single to right field, bringing in Rodriguez for the 3-3 tie.

Both sides posted a scoreless ninth, before RHP Cole White (W, 3-1) kept the Cardinals from moving in front in the top of the 10th. RHP Joey Donofrio (L, 2-3) started the bottom of the 10th with a groundout that hit off of him on the mound. Donofrio stayed in the game, but pinch-hitting OF Tyler Massey swung himself on with a double inside the left field line. The Cardinals intentionally walked Featherston, before bringing in LHP Justin Wright to face 3B Joey Wong. Wong, though, worked a walk to load the bases. Adames then chopped a come-backer to the mound that Wright was able to knock down, but Massey had just enough time to streak home from third base for the walk-off 4-3 win for Tulsa.
