Drillers take series finale from Cardinals

July 31, 2013

Tulsa, OK - The Tulsa Drillers claimed the 4-0 win against the Springfield Cardinals, wrapping up the three-game series before 3,815 fans at ONEOK Field on Wednesday evening.

After Springfield RHP Richard Castillo (L, 7-7) and Tulsa RHP Dan Houston (W, 3-6) alternated the first two frames in scoreless fashion, the Drillers (18-22, 52-56) swung in front in the bottom of the third. Leading off the inning, C Dallas Tarleton drove a solo home run to center field, lifting Tulsa in front, 1-0.

The Drillers doubled the early advantage in the bottom of the fourth. With two away and the bases clear, 3B Jayson Langfels struck with a solo shot to left field, making it 2-0.

Tulsa swatted another solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. This time, it was CF Delta Cleary, Jr. who drove the long-ball over the left field wall. Castillo, though, again responded well, closing out the rest of the inning unscathed to keep it just a 3-0 deficit.

The Drillers added an insurance run with an unearned tally against RHP Zach Russell in the bottom of the seventh. With one down, SS Joey Wong reached base with a single, before racing around to third on an errant pick off attempt by Russell. One out later, Tarleton hit a sharp grounder that just snuck under the glove of Scruggs for a fielding miscue, enabling Wong to come in from third for the 4-0 advantage.

After Houston and RHP Kenny Rodgers kept the Cardinals (19-21, 52-56) bats in check through the first eight frames, RHP Cole White (S, 13) tossed the scoreless ninth to close the 4-0 win for Tulsa.
