Missions escape with 3-2 win

June 30, 2013

San Antonio, TX - The Springfield Cardinals attempted another late-game comeback, striking for a run in the ninth, but the San Antonio Missions escaped for the 3-2 win before 3,729 fans at Wolff Stadium on Sunday night.

After the Missions (5-6, 43-37) got in front early with a run in the bottom of the first, the Cardinals (5-6, 38-41) responded right away in the top of the second. With the bases clear and two away, 2B Luis Mateo extended the second frame with a double. C Audry Perez then placed an RBI single through the middle, plating Mateo to tie the game, 1-1.

Through his next four innings, LHP Tim Cooney (L, 3-5) allowed only two walks and one single, while registering seven of his eight total strikeouts, but the Missions moved back in front in the bottom of the sixth. With one on and two down, 3B Jake Blackwood won the battle against Cooney with a two-run homer over the left field wall, lifting San Antonio into the 3-1 lead.

Springfield again refused to go down without a fight, attempting the comeback in the top of the ninth against RHP Matt Stites (S, 8). With one away, SS Jake Lemmerman rocketed a triple into the right field corner, before OF Adam Melker brought him home with a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side. Melker moved to second on a wild pitch, but Stites got out of it with a strikeout and a fly out, closing the 3-2 win for the Missions. San Antonio RHP Ruben Mejia (W, 1-0) tossed a pair of scoreless relief innings to log the win in his Double A debut.
