Springdale, AR - The Northwest Arkansas Naturals took the series opener against the Springfield Cardinals, 4-0, before 3,860 fans at Arvest Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Naturals (9-16) took an early lead in the bottom of the first against RHP Boone Whiting (L, 2-2). With one away, 3B Orlando Calixte struck out on a pitch in the dirt and managed to reach first base safely on the dropped third strike. One out later, DH Mitch Canham connected for an RBI double to make it 1-0.
Northwest Arkansas added a run on a solo shot by CF Yem Prades in the third, before an RBI double by C Juan Graterol in the fourth made it 3-0. The Naturals tallied their final run in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at second and third and two down, Whiting induced a ground ball off the bat of RF Whit Merrifield, but a fielding miscue enabled Merrifield to reach base safely and Canham to score from third.
The Cardinals (12-13) threatened with runners in scoring position in every inning from the fifth through the ninth, but the Naturals escaped each time and held on for the 4-0 win. RHP Yordano Ventura (W, 2-0) tossed five scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts to log the win, while RHP Edwin Carl (S, 4) picked up the save.
