Pham named Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month

May 2, 2013

Springfield, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Springfield Cardinals CF Tommy Pham has been named the St. Louis Minor League Player of the Month for April. Additionally, former Springfield RHP John Gast, currently with the Memphis Redbirds (AAA), has been named the Minor League Pitcher of the Month.

Pham, 25, compiled a .322 batting average (28-for-87) with five home runs, 15 RBIs, five triples and four doubles through 24 games in April. The Las Vegas, NV native currently leads all Texas Leaguers with six triples, a .667 slugging percentage and 60 total bases. Pham is tied for 4th in the league with five home runs, and ranks 3rd with 15 extra-base hits and 9th in batting average.

"Tommy is off to a great start," said Cardinals Director of Minor League Operations John Vuch. "He's worked incredibly hard during the time he was injured, and now that he's healthy, is showing the exciting ability that we've known he possesses. He really excelled in all facets of the game this month, playing an outstanding defensive centerfield, running the bases aggressively, and putting up well-rounded offensive numbers."

Pham has spent parts of the past four seasons in Springfield, and was originally selected by St. Louis in the 16th round of the 2006 June Draft out of Durango High School in Las Vegas.

Gast, 24, went 3-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA through five April starts with the Redbirds. He racked up 29 strikeouts through 29.1 frames, limiting opponents to a .204 batting average.

The Altamonte Springs, FL native spent parts of the 2011 and 2012 seasons in Springfield, before joining Memphis last year. He was selected by the Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2007 June Draft out of Lake Brantley High School in Florida.
