RockHounds nip Cardinals, 5-2

May 26, 2013

Springfield, MO - The Midland RockHounds claimed a 5-2 victory against the Springfield Cardinals before 4,172 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday evening.

The RockHounds (24-25) rallied right away to take a two-run lead in the top of the first inning against LHP Ryan Sherriff (L, 0-1) in his Springfield debut. DH Conner Crumbliss led off the game with a triple to center field, before trotting home on an RBI base hit from CF D'Arby Myers. Myers moved to second on a single by 1B Anthony Aliotti, and then tried to score on a LF Jake Goebbert base hit, but CF Tommy Pham threw Myers out at the plate to keep it just a one-run deficit. However, back-to-back walks forced in the second run of the frame to give the RockHounds the 2-0 advantage.

Springfield (24-23) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit in half against RHP Sean Murphy (W, 2-1). With two down and the bases empty, C Audry Perez crushed a solo home run over the left-center field fence, bringing the Cardinals within one run, 2-1.

Midland stretched the lead back to multiple runs with a pair in the top of the fourth inning. With two on and two down, Myers sent a two-run double into the left field corner. He was thrown out trying to get to third on the play, but swung the RockHounds into the 4-1 lead.

Both teams then exchanged a solo home run in the ninth inning. RockHounds Crumbliss drove a solo shot over the right field wall to start the top of the inning before RHP Keith Butler struck out the side. With two down and the bases clear in the bottom of the frame, 1B Xavier Scruggs smacked a solo home run to left field, keeping the Cardinals alive. However, RHP Brett Hunter (S, 1) rebounded with a strikeout to SS Jake Lemmerman, closing the 5-2 win for Midland.
