May 6, 2013

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals fell to the Tulsa Drillers, 15-4, before 3,166 fans at Hammons Field on Monday evening. St. Louis 1B Matt Adams finished 1-for-4 with a base hit in his final rehab start in Springfield.

The Drillers (15-15) took the early lead against the Cardinals and LHP Anthony Ferrara (L, 2-3) in the top of the second inning. With one away and the bases clear, 1B Kiel Roling drove a solo homer over the left-field wall, swinging the Drillers to the 1-0 lead.

Tulsa struck again in the top of the fourth frame. Leading off the inning, RF Kent Matthes drove a solo home run over the right-center field wall, doubling the lead to 2-0.

The Drillers opened the lead further with an eight-run rally in the top of the fifth. Tulsa strung together eight hits in the inning, including two-run doubles by Roling and 2B Angelys Nina, a solo homer and an RBI single by C Jose Gonzalez, and RBI knocks by RHP Tim Gustafson and LF Kyle Parker, stretching it to 10-0.

Tulsa didn't slow down in the sixth, adding five more runs. A couple of Cardinals errors, along with RBI fielder's choices by 3B Jayson Langfels and Gonzalez and a two-run double by CF Delta Cleary, Jr. comprised the rally, making it 15-0.

The Cardinals (15-14) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Walks by SS Jake Lemmerman and LF Mike O'Neill, followed by a single from CF James Ramsey, loaded the bases with one down. 3B Luis Mateo entered the contest as a pinch hitter and skied an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, plating Lemmerman to make it 15-1.

Springfield strung together three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. RF Tommy Pham led off with a pinch hit double and moved to third base on a ground out. Ramsey worked a walk, before Mateo bounced an RBI fielder's choice to score Pham. After a base hit by Adams, who was pinch run for by 1B Xavier Scruggs, RF Chris Swauger ripped a two-run single to center, making it 15-4.

However, Tulsa RHP Juan Gonzalez came in for the ninth and dealt a 1-2-3 frame, closing the 15-4 win for the Drillers.
