Wilson and Cards walk off, 5-4, in 10 innings before 7,545 fans

June 14, 2014

Springfield, MO - For the second time this week, 2B Jacob Wilson propelled the Springfield Cardinals to a walk-off win, as the Cards topped the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, 5-4, in 10 innings before a sellout crowd of 7,545 fans at Hammons Field. In addition to Wilson's game-winning RBI single, Springfield belted four home runs in the game.

After a scoreless opening frame, both sides exchanged a solo home run in their halves of the second. Facing LHP Kyle Hald, Naturals 1B Max Ramirez led off the top of the second with a solo shot. However, Cardinals 1B Curt Smith evened it out with a solo blast right inside the left field foul pole off of RHP Jason Adam in the bottom of the second for the 1-1 tie.

However, Ramirez struck again in the top of the third inning, which started with an error and featured three unearned runs. With two on and two away, Ramirez lined a three-run home run to left-center field, swinging the Naturals back in front, 4-1.

After the three-run homer, though, Hald dug in. The All-Star retired 16 of the next 17 batters through his eight innings of work, including the final 13 in a row, keeping the Naturals (24-44) at only four runs on the board.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals (33-35) chipped away with another home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two away and the bases clear, All-Star C Cody Stanley laced a solo homer to left-center field, chipping the deficit to just 4-2.

Springfield kept swinging closer with another solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. After an inning-opening grounder, 3B Patrick Wisdom crushed a solo shot over the left field fence to cut down the Naturals lead to just one run, 4-3.

With the Cardinals still trailing by one run and down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth, All-Star OF James Ramsey entered as a pinch-hitter to face RHP Andrew Triggs (L, 3-1). Ramsey came through with a towering solo home run to left field, tying it up, 1-1, and forcing extra innings.

After LHP Lee Stoppelman (W, 1-1) dealt a scoreless top of the 10th, the Cardinals walked off in the bottom of the frame. CF Starlin Rodriguez started the rally with a walk, before motoring to second base on a sacrifice bunt by DH Aledmys Diaz. Wilson then lined an RBI single to left field and Rodriguez just beat the throw home, scoring from second base to lift the Cardinals to the 5-4 walk-off win in 10 frames.
