Wong and Petrick named St. Louis Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year

Springfield, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that former Springfield Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong and RHP Zach Petrick are the 2013 St. Louis Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year.

After helping the Springfield Cardinals win their first-ever Texas League Championship in 2012, Wong spent the majority of the 2013 campaign with the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) before debuting with the big league club on August 16. In Memphis, the 23 year-old compiled a .303 batting average with 10 home runs, eight triples and 45 RBIs in 107 games. He also swiped 20 bases and was only caught stealing once. The Hilo, Hawaii native then collected nine hits with one double, six runs and three stolen bases in 32 regular season games with St. Louis. Wong saw action in seven playoff games with the Cardinals, and picked up a single and a steal in the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. He was selected by the Cardinals in the 1st round of the 2011 June Draft out of the University of Hawaii.

Petrick, 24, split the 2013 season between the Peoria Chiefs (Single-A), the Palm Beach Cardinals (High-A) and Springfield. After posting a 0.83 ERA in Peoria and a 0.27 ERA in Palm Beach, the Morris, Illinois native was promoted to Springfield on July 14. In his Double-A debut on July 16, Petrick shut down the Arkansas Travelers with eight strikeouts and only one run allowed on four hits through six innings. He made nine total starts for Springfield, logging a 3-3 record with a 3.99 ERA. In 47.1 innings with the Cards, Petrick struck out 44 batters while walking only 15. He was signed by the Cardinals as a Non-Drafted Free Agent out of the University of Northwestern Ohio in 2012.

Wong and Petrick are the third consecutive pair of former Springfield Cardinals to win the awards in the same year, following OF Oscar Taveras and RHP Seth Maness in 2012 and 1B Matt Adams and RHP Shelby Miller in 2011.
