Giants Force Extras But Ports Big 10th Secures Win

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Ports avoided a full repeat of last night’s ninth inning collapse to at least force extra innings after allowing the Giants to tie it in the ninth, before pulling away in the 10th for an 11-6 Stockton win.

The Ports took a 1-0 lead in the third inning by scratching across a run in their second bases-loaded situation on the day. Ramon Landaeta struck out with the bases loaded and two out in the first inning, but he worked a bases-loaded walk in the same situation in the third to plate a run.

The Giants got one back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Dario Reynoso, but a diving play in left center by Max Durrington with two outs kept San Jose from taking the lead. Stockton put up their first crooked number of the day in the fifth inning. Durrington walked and stole second (19) before Roman Martin singled through the left side to put two aboard. Nate Nankil came through with a double (6) to left to score Durrington and make it 2-1. Back-to-back sac flies from Jose Ramos and Landaeta plated two more to put the Ports up 3-1.

San Jose cut it to a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth on a home run (15) from Tuesday’s walk-off hero for the Giants, Jeremiah Jenkins, and an RBI single from Angelo Guzman off 10th round pick in this year draft Dominic Mauro who was making his pro debut with the Ports.

Each team scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings, as the Giants wouldn’t let the Ports keep a two-run lead. Ramos collected his first hit as a Port in the top of the seventh to score Durrington, but Martin was thrown out at the plate to keep it a 5-3 Stockton lead. An RBI double (21) for Jenkins cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the inning.

Drew Burress was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, but they would again have a runner thrown out at the plate on a good play by the Giants to keep it at 6-4. A solo home run for Oliver Tejada (4) trimmed it back to a 6-5 game in the bottom of the frame, but the Ports made their own good relay play with three members of the team when Ramos fired into Martin who made a heads up play to get the runner rounding third to remain in the lead.

A one-out single for Jenkins started the ninth inning rally this time, but Bjay Cooke had two outs and an 0-2 count to Cam Maldanado before hitting him to extend the game. Andy Polanco singled into right to score Jenkins on a bang-bang play at the plate and tie the game at 6-6, before Cooke got a groundout to first to send the game to extras.

The Ports wouldn’t squander their opportunities for more breathing room in the 10th however, leaving as little opportunity as possible for another Giants comeback. Samir Chires entered the game having allowed just one run in 11.2 innings so far this season, but that one run was against Stockton on July 19.

The Ports would come out swinging against Chires on an RBI double from Bryan Andrade (12) and the first pro hit by Alex Hernandez to make it 8-6. A base hit for Durrington put Stockton up 9-6 before a two-RBI single by Nankil gave the Ports their 11-6 lead.

Cole Miller shut the door with a three-up, three-down bottom of the 10th to tie the six-game series at a game apiece. The game was delayed multiple times due to a drown flying over the ballpark.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Durrington walked three times along with his base hit. Ramos walked twice to go along with his sac fly and RBI single, and Hernandez’ RBI single snapped a stretch of seven-straight strikeouts to start his pro career. The Ports are now 7-1 in extra-inning games this season.

UP NEXT: Game three returns to a 6:30 PM start time, with LHP Ricardo Estrada (3-2, 3.67) starting for San Jose while RHP Shotaro Morii (0-3, 14.66) will function as an opener for the Ports.
