Ports Suffer Walk Off Loss for Just Second Time

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Some spectacular debuts for the A’s organization’s new draft picks were spoiled by a walk-win for San Jose (21-16, 58-45) as the Ports (20-17, 47-56) dropped game one of the six-game series 5-4.

Stockton got three solo home runs on the night, including one from eighth overall pick in this year’s draft, Drew Burress. The young superstar out of Georgia Tech belted the second pitch of the game out to left center for his first professional home run and a 1-0 Ports lead. Fourth-round pick out of UCLA Roman Martin singled two batters later and sixth-round pick Alex Sosa singled into right center to score Martin and put Stockton in front 2-0.

The Ports top prospects who have been on this roster for a few months came through with back-to-back jacks in the second frame. Edgar Montero served up another oppo taco (9) over the wall in left to go up 3-0. That was followed by Shotaro Morii going the other way as well for a solo shot (4) and a 4-0 Stockton lead.

But that would be the Ports final hit until there was one out in the eighth, leaving the Ports stuck on four runs. In the meantime, Lorenzo Meola doubled (32) to drive in Josuar Gonzalez who reached on a wild pitch after striking out to get the Giants on the board in the third. That was followed by a Dario Reynoso single to right to score Meola and make it a 4-2 game.

A solo home run for Cam Maldonado (14) out to deep left off starter Alex Barr to cut it to a 4-3 contest. It looked like the Giants might tie it in the sixth, but it was ruled that Rod Barajas Jr. interfered with Martin at third on a pop up that dropped in the infield.

Josnier Parra threw 2.1 shutout innings and Jackson Holmes put up two scoreless frames as well to keep the Ports up 4-3 going into the ninth. Kade Holmes got the first two outs of the ninth before walking Dario Reynoso on a full count. That brought the powerful Jeremiah Jenkins to the plate, who belted a two-run blast (15) out down the right field line to give San Jose a 5-4 walk-off win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: A loss for Fresno keeps the Ports in second place by just a game with the Grizzlies and Giants tied for first. New additions to Baseball America’s list from the 2026 Draft include Drew Burress at No. 3, Roman Martin at No. 21, Alex Hernandez at No. 24, and Alex Sosa at No. 29 on the Ports roster. The walk-off was just the second of the season for Stockton and they are now 13-10 in one-run games.

UP NEXT: Game two is scheduled for a 1:00 PM first pitch with RHP Argenis Cayama (3-0, 4.62) starting for San Jose versus LHP Corey Braun (4-6, 5.80) going for Stockton.
