Stockton Earns Split in San Jose, Back in Tie for First

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Ports (23-19, 50-58) got it going early in Sunday’s series finale for a 14-7 win, earning a series split in San Jose. Stockton’s win moves them into a tie for first place in the California League North Second Half standings and a chance to play themselves into the postseason with 24 games to play.

Drew Burress hit a deep fly to left for his third home run in his first series, making it 1-0 in the first. The Giants (23-19, 60-48) quickly answered with two on a Jeremiah Jenkins RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. However, it would be all Stockton after that.

The Ports took advantage of three early walks in the second, including a bases-loaded walk to Shotaro Morii tying the game. Max Durrington would then double (9) to add two more giving Stockton the lead. Michael Brooks singled to score Morii, and an error on a Nate Nankil sacrifice fly scored two more, capping off a seven-run top of the second to make it 8-2.

San Jose manufactured a run in the bottom of the inning to keep the game within reach, but a pair of two-run home runs from Bobby Blandford (16) and Ramon Landaeta (2) in the fifth, gave the Ports a comfortable 10-3 advantage. Blandford tripled (1) for an additional RBI, and Brooks delivered a sacrifice fly for the extra point, making it 14-6 Stockton.

San Jose’s Broedy Poppell managed to knock Josiah Romeo out of the game with a three-run home run (6), but it did not showcase the quality day that the starter had for the Ports, picking up his seventh win of the season and getting through 5.2 innings with six strikeouts before the long ball ended his day in the sixth. Jackson Holmes gave a shutout 1.1 innings with a couple strikeouts, getting the Ports a series split against a strong San Jose team.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Stockton’s win over San Jose and Fresno’s loss to Visalia put the Ports, Giants, and Grizzlies into a three-way tie for first in the California League North’s second half standings.

Stockton broke out the Cheladas uniforms on the road, and are now 9-3 when sporting their Sunday alternates.

UP NEXT: The Ports head back home for a six-game series against Visalia. Tuesday’s game is scheduled for a 7:05 PM first pitch at Banner Island Ballpark.
