Moore's grand slam leads Chiefs past Indians

Solano, Goodwin also homer in 7-3 win

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Indianapolis Indians, 7-3, on Thursday night from NBT Bank Stadium. Tyler Moore broke up a tie game with a seventh-inning grand slam to lead the Chiefs to the win.

Syracuse (34-26) struck first in the second inning off left-hander Adam Wilk. Jhonatan Solano led off the inning and homered over the left-field wall to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. With one out, Brandon Laird walked. Laird then moved to second on a Taylor Jordan sacrifice bunt. An Emmanuel Burriss base hit to left field scored Laird for a 2-0 Syracuse advantage.

Indianapolis (35-25) tied the game in the top of the fourth. Chris McGuiness walked to lead off the inning. Hague then homered off Chiefs starter Taylor Jordan to even the score at two. Later in the inning, Jordan struck out Wilk with the bases loaded to end the Indians' scoring threat.

With one swing of the bat, the Chiefs regained the lead in the sixth inning off Indians reliever Cody Eppley. Eppley retired Destin Hood and Solano to start the bottom half of the inning, but Brian Goodwin hit a solo home run to give Syracuse a 3-2 lead.

The Indians tied the game once again in the seventh inning. Zach Jackson replaced Jordan on the mound. Jackson allowed a single to Polanco to lead off the inning. With Robert Andino up to bat, Polanco stole second base. Andino then singled to center field, and Polanco scored to tie the score at three.

Syracuse responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Will Rhymes led off the inning with a single. Burriss then laid down a bunt, and Indianapolis reliever Daniel Schlereth's throw to second was late in an attempt to force Rhymes out. The fielder's choice put runners on first and second with no outs. A Zach Walters sacrifice bunt moved Rhymes to third base and Burriss to second. Steven Souza Jr. was intentionally walked to load the bases with Tyler Moore coming up to the plate. Moore crushed a 2-2 pitch from Wirfin Obispo over the right-field fence for a grand slam and a 7-3 Chiefs lead.

Syracuse goes for the series win against Indianapolis on Friday night. The Chiefs will send right-hander Ryan Tatusko to the mound to face Indians left-hander Jeff Locke. First pitch is set for 7:00.
