Red Sox beat Chiefs, 7-1

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost a 7-1 decision to the Pawtucket Red Sox on Tuesday night in the second of a three-game series. The Red Sox grabbed three first-inning runs and used six shutout innings from right-hander Allen Webster to earn the win.

Pawtucket (4-2) got started early against Chiefs right-hander Omar Poveda, who made his Syracuse debut. Brock Holt and Alex Hassan started the game with back-to-back walks, and second baseman Justin Henry followed with a run-scoring double to right-center field. After a Ryan Lavarnway strikeout, left field Bryce Brentz punctured a two-run double to the wall in center field, giving the Red Sox a 3-0 advantage.

In the fourth inning, Pawtucket tacked on a run in a six-pitch span. Designated hitter Dan Butler doubled, advanced to third base on a Heiker Meneses sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly from Peter Hissey.

The Red Sox continued their offensive surge in the fifth inning. After a Hassan double, Henry slammed a 2-0 pitch over the right-field wall for a two-run home run, giving the Red Sox a 6-0 lead. Four pitches later, Lavarnway knocked a solo home run to right field for a 7-0 advantage. The first 300 batters in Chiefs games this season, between Syracuse and its opponents, had not hit a home run - but Henry and Lavarnway snapped the streak with back-to-back blasts.

Syracuse (1-4) grabbed its first run in the ninth inning against left-hander Drake Britton. Pinch-hitter Jose Lozada began the inning with a double to right field in his first career Triple-A at-bat, and Jhonatan Solano's single moved Lozada to third base. Brian Goodwin followed with a walk to load the bases, and two batters later, Manny Burriss walked to force in a run. Britton recovered, however, inducing a double-play groundout from Eury Perez to end the game.

The Chiefs and Red Sox will conclude their series with a 12:05 matinee on Wednesday afternoon. Syracuse left-hander Danny Rosenbaum and Pawtucket right-hander Anthony Ranaudo are the scheduled starters.
