Chiefs hammer Red Sox in series finale

Syracuse, NY (May 13, 2018) - The Syracuse Chiefs racked up a season-high 16 hits and tied a season high with nine runs in a 9-1 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Five Chiefs players had multiple hits, and three Syracuse hitters had multiple RBIs in the win. With the victory, the Chiefs won three of the four games in their series against the Red Sox.

Syracuse (18-16) scored first in the bottom of the second inning. With Irving Falu at third base and Matt Reistetter at first, Bengie González singled, scoring Falu for a 1-0 lead.
Pawtucket (16-18) scored its lone run of the game in the top of the third. Tzu-Wei Lin walked to begin the inning, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an Aneury Tavárez sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game, 1-1.
That was the only run that Syracuse starting pitcher Edwin Jackson allowed. The 34-year old pitched a season-high seven innings while allowing four hits and striking out six batters.
The Chiefs regained the lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Matt Reynolds singled and then stole second base. Falu followed with a double to right-center field to bring home Reynolds for a 2-1 edge. Jones then tripled to center field, knocking in Falu to push the Chiefs lead to 3-1.
Syracuse added to its lead in the fourth. With two outs, Adrían Sanchez hammered a ball off the top of the left-field wall for a double. Hague also doubled, scoring Sanchez for a 4-1 Syracuse edge.
The Chiefs scored for the fourth straight frame with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. With Reynolds at third and Jones at second, Reistetter grounded out back to the mound, but Reynolds scored from third to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Gonzalez followed with his second RBI single of the game, sending Jones home for a 6-1 edge.
The scoring continued in the seventh as Jones tripled home Reynolds, and Gonzalez singled home another run, pushing the Chiefs lead to seven, 8-1.
Syracuse put the exclamation point on the afternoon in the eighth. With one out, Hague doubled. Three batters later, Falu picked up his third hit of the game with a single that scored Hague to give Syracuse a 9-1 advantage.
The Chiefs are off on Monday before beginning a three-game series on the road against the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night. RHP César Vargas will pitch for Syracuse against Rochester RHP Aaron Slegers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
