Pawtucket (42-47) started the scoring in the first inning. Aneury Tavárez and Tony Renda each doubled to put runners on second and third with no-one out. Two batters later, Adam Lind hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Tavarez and give the PawSox a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (38-52) quickly answered in the second. Matt Reynolds singled to start the inning off Drew Pomeranz. After a groundout, Hernandez singled to center field to pick up his first RBI of the game.
A pair of two-run home runs moved the score to 3-3. Former Nationals' farm and Tony Renda hit a two-run home run off Milone in the bottom of the third to give the PawSox a 3-1 lead. But again the Chiefs quickly answered, as Hernandez homered just to the right of center with Severino on first to tie the score.
The Chiefs took the lead for good in the sixth. Syracuse loaded the bases with two outs after José Marmolejos singled and Matt Reynolds walked to start the inning, and Chris Dominguez walked with two outs. Irving Falu then striped a single past short to score two runs and give the Chiefs a 5-3 lead.
Syracuse would add an insurance run in the ninth. Andrew Stevenson walked and stole second. Adrían Sanchez then popped up into foul ground at first. Stevenson tagged up and moved to third on the play, and forced a bad throw from Adam Lind, and Stevenson scored on the throwing error to push the lead to 6-3.
The Chiefs and PawSox continue their four-game series Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. RHP Jefry Rodriguez is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite RHP William Cuevas for the PawSox.
