Voth strong, but Chiefs drop series finale to Bisons, 4-1

Syracuse, NY (July 1, 2018) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the series finale to the Buffalo Bisons, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Chris Dominguez homered for the Chiefs in the win. Austin Voth was strong as well, allowing just a run in seven innings of work, but was out-dueled by Sean Reid-Foley. 

Buffalo (38-37) broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Jason Leblebijian led off with a walk. Michael De La Cruz followed with a double down the right-field line, scoring Leblebijian from first base for a 1-0 lead.

The Bisons added two runs in the top of the eighth. Richard Unreña worked a walk to begin the inning. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. then doubled home Gurriel to give Buffalo a 2-0 edge. Gurriel moved to third base on a Rowdy Tellez ground out to second base. Two batters later, Dwight Smith Jr. singled to right field to score Gurriel and make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Syracuse (34-47) scored its lone run in the bottom of the eighth. Dominguez led off the frame by crushing a pitch over the right-field wall for a solo home run that trimmed the Bisons lead to two, 3-1.

Buffalo added a run in the ninth. With two outs Andrew Guillotte hit an infield single. Ureña then reached on an error that put runners at first and second. Gurriel followed with a single to right field, scoring Guillotte for a 4-1 Bisons advantage.

Chiefs starting pitcher Austin Voth made another strong start, allowing only one run in seven innings on the mound. The 26-year-old struck out four batters and walked two.

Syracuse goes on the road for two games in the Lehigh Valley on Monday and Tuesday before retiring home to Syracuse to face the IronPigs on Wednesday for the Fourth of July and on Thursday. The Chiefs and IronPigs meet on Monday night in Allentown, PA with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. RHP John Simms will start for Syracuse while RHP Drew Anderson will pitch for Lehigh Valley.
