Tampa, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees will honor the 25th anniversary of the film "A League of Their Own" on Saturday, June 24th at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Fans are invited to witness a Women's Baseball game featuring two of the nation's top amateur teams, the East Coast Yankees and the New England Women Red Sox, as they face off at 3:00 p.m.
Players and coaches will be wearing custom "A League of Their Own" jerseys when the T-Yanks take on the Dunedin Blue Jays at 6:30 p.m. Fans are able to bid on the jerseys in a silent auction at the game, while others will be auctioned online at tampayankees.milbauctions.com, with the proceeds benefiting the Women's Sports Museum.
A fireworks show will follow the conclusion of the game. Afterwards, fans will be invited onto the outfield grass to watch the movie, "A League of Their Own," on the video board.
Released on July 1, 1992, "A League of Their Own" is set during World War II and follows the story of two sisters who struggle to succeed in the first female professional baseball league. Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell, the film is widely considered a classic among sports comedies and is the origin of the phrase "There's no crying in baseball!" exclaimed by Manager Jimmy Dugan (Hanks).
