13-2 win ends Cubs' 4-2 road trip

With the game tied 2-2 after six innings, Daytona scored five runs in the seventh and six runs in the eighth to take a commanding 13-2 lead.

Clearwater, FL - The Daytona Cubs finished a 4-2 road trip with a 13-2 win over the Clearwater Threshers at Bright House Field on Wednesday afternoon.

A night after the Threshers belted record-tying 27 hits against the Cubs, Daytona and Clearwater entered the seventh inning tied 2-2, but the Cubs exploded for five runs in the seventh and six runs in the eighth to take the commanding 13-2 lead.

After Clearwater plated a run in the first inning, extending their consecutive scoring streak to 10-straight innings, the Cubs scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.

Clearwater RF Cameron Perkins lined a solo home run to left field in the sixth off Cubs reliever LHP Austin Kirk (W-2-0) to tie the game at 2-2.

In the seventh, Cubs leadoff hitter CF Zeke DeVoss was hit by a pitch then stole second, LF Taiwan Easterling walked, and SS Javier Baez hit an infield single to load the bases. After RHP Luis Paulino came on in relief, RF John Andreoli hit a sacrifice fly to center field, 2B Stephen Bruno extended his hitting streak to 11-straight games with an RBI single to left, 1B Dustin Geiger doubled to left-center field which also scored a run and extended his hitting streak to 10-straight games, and 3B Ben Carhart singled making it four consecutive run-producing hits for the Cubs.

In the eighth, both Baez and Geiger hit home runs (Baez' third of the season, Geiger second of the season) in the six-run frame.

Cubs' starter RHP Yao-Lin Wang threw four innings and allowed a run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in his first start of the year. His ERA for the season is now 0.82.

Kirk pitched the final five innings and allowed the solo home run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

In the game, DeVoss reached bases safely in five of his six plate appearances (three walks, hit by pitch, double). Geiger went 3-5 with four RBIs and now leads the Cubs with most total bases in one game (seven). Baez' home run now puts him in the team-lead with three. He went 3-6.

With the win, the Cubs return home at 6-5 on the season. Daytona will take on the Tampa Yankees in a three-game series beginning Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
