Tortugas Stoned by Crabs

Charlotte rallies to take opener

By Daytona Tortugas | April 18, 2017 9:29 AM ET

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Tortugas saw a one-run lead erode away in the eighth, as the Charlotte Stone Crabs came from behind to win 6-4 on Monday night in front of 1,640 fans at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Tortugas bullpen allowed three runs in the eighth.

For the fourth consecutive game, it was the opposing team that got on the board first against Daytona. Kevin Padlo singled home Brandon Lowe to put Charlotte ahead, 1-0.

The Tortugas were quick to answer in the second. Gavin LaValley hit his third home run of the year, a line-drive shot to left to tie the game. In the same inning, Alfredo Rodriguez would single and advance over to third via a wild pitch and stolen base. Narciso Crook notched his first RBI of the year when he blooped a two-out single to center to put Daytona in front, 2-1.

Before Kevin Padlo doubled home two runs in the sixth to give Charlotte a 3-2 edge, the Tortugas had plenty of opportunities to break through for more runs. They left the bases loaded in the third and fifth innings, along with leaving two on in the fourth. Daytona stranded twelve runners on base in total.

Things turned back in Daytona's favor in the seventh inning. Nick Senzel and Rodriguez singled ahead of Chadwick Tromp. The Tortuga DH delivered a double to the wall in left center field, his first hit of 2017, to put Daytona back in the lead, 4-3.

The Tortugas bullpen, which hadn't allowed an earned run in over 29 innings entering the game, couldn't continue the streak any longer. The Stone Crabs got the first three men on in the eighth before Padlo hit a sacrifice-fly to left, which tied the game at four. Dalton Kelly followed with a two-run double to put Charlotte ahead for good.

Wendolyn Bautista didn't factor in the decision, after permitting three earned runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. Austin Orewiler (0-1) received the loss, after yielding a walk, three hits, and two runs over 1 1/3 innings. Sandy Lugo allowed two runs over his two innings of work.

The four-game set, and 11-game homestand, continues on Tuesday with Silver Sluggers Night and Taco Tuesday at the ballpark. RHP Jonathan Crawford (0-0, 1.04) will make his third start of the season against Charlotte's RHP Tyler Brashears (1-0, 7.36). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM, while the pregame show begins at 6:45 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: Reds Top Prospect Nick Senzel registered his first three-hit game at the Advanced-A level… Gavin LaValley has homered twice in his past three games… Narciso Crook stole two bases on consecutive pitches after his RBI single in the second inning. They were his first stolen bases since May, 2016.
