DAYTONA BEACH, FL - On Monday afternoon, the Daytona Tortugas were recognized by minor league baseball for their Bob Ross Night as the top promotion for the month of July. This marks the first time a Daytona Beach Baseball promotion has won the award.
The Tortugas debuted Bob Ross Night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday, July 15th to honor the late painter from Daytona Beach. Nearly 3,800 fans packed The Jack that night enjoying a fun and memorable evening. This marked the largest crowd for the Daytona Tortugas in 2017 outside of the Opening Weekend Extravaganza.
The day began with a Bob Ross Happy Little Fun Run around the ballpark in the morning, where runners participated in a color run including many activities such as the painting of canvases, photo shoot opportunities and even a selfie with Bob Ross Cutouts.
The celebration continued with a sold out pregame painting class at The Jack, conducted by seven Bob Ross certified painters. The first 1,000 fans through the gates received the first ever Bob Ross Bobblehead and were on hand for the Happy Little Tree Dedication done by the Tortugas on the Riverwalk of the stadium in Bob's honor.
The on-field contests were Bob Ross themed throughout the night, including a Bob Ross look-a-like contest, Pictionary, and many others.
The event was covered by ESPN throughout the weekend, as well as many local and national media outlets. The promotion was picked up by news stations throughout the country, as well as nearly two dozen publications, such as Sports Illustrated.
Earlier this month, the Daytona Tortugas surpassed their 2016 total attendance. Bob Ross Night was just one of many great promotions that have helped the Tortugas garner national attention and provide great community involvement. This will mark the first time Daytona has ever been a finalist for the Golden Bobblehead Award, which recognizes the best promo in Minor League Baseball for the entire season. The Golden Bobblehead will be announced in Greenville, South Carolina at the end of September.
The Tortugas still have 13 games remaining on the home schedule for 2017's Season of the Fan. The weeklong homestand continues at The Jack through Sunday, including #CommUNITY Night this Friday, Fireworks on Saturday and Shelldon's Birthday Party on Sunday.
