ASHEVILLE-- Earlier today, the South Atlantic League announced its annual end of the year awards. The Asheville Tourists are proud to share that Doug Maurer is the recipient of the Media Relations Director of the Year.
Maurer, who just completed his eighth season with the Asheville Tourists, carries the title of Director of Broadcast/Media Releations at the ballpark, but also has made an impact in the local community off the field. Doug has used his talents to emcee numerous charitable functions throughout Western North Carolina, in an effort to give back to a community that has become his second home.
The Indianapolis native and product of Indiana University received his start in professional baseball with the Princeton Rays, as a Marketing and Administrative intern. That experience coupled with his years in Asheville has given Doug an increased awareness of how to meet the needs of the local media outlets that cover Tourists baseball, while also maximizing the exposure that the organization receives.
Various coaches, scouts and media members in the South Atlantic League all attested to Doug's work ethic, as his daily stat packs and game notes left no stone unturned. Doug's efforts in that area made the jobs of those individuals easier, while also making their McCormick Field experience more pleasurable.
"The Tourists provide me with the opportunity to represent them on a daily basis," said Maurer. "To showcase this organization's values through the media, connect the fans through the broadcasts, and be a part of this community is honor in itself. Traveling to the other ballparks and seeing first-hand how talented so many of the Media Relations Directors are in the South Atlantic League makes this award even more special."
This season, while providing play-by-play coverage for all 140 Asheville Tourists games, Doug eclipsed the 1,000 games called barrier. In addition to his role in that capacity, he also eclipsed a personal best mark in sold inventory at the ballpark for the 2017 campaign.
