Johnny Bench Added To 2014 Superstar Series
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - He is regarded by many as the greatest catcher in the history of Major League Baseball, and on Saturday, August 30th, Johnny Bench will be in Vancouver out at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium as the Canadians host the Spokane Indians.
For 17 seasons, Bench was the standard behind the plate making 14 All-Star Game appearances while helping the Cincinnati Reds to six Division Titles, four National League pennants and two World Series Championships as part of the 'Big Red Machine'.
Bench is considered to be the greatest all-around catcher based on his 10 Gold Gloves (1968-77) as well as career batting average of .267 with 389 home runs. He was twice named National League Most Valuable Player before his number (#5) was retired by the Reds and his plaque was placed among the greats in Cooperstown (1989) after being inducted on the first ballot.
Johnny Bench's appearance in Vancouver on Saturday, August 30th starting at 7:05pm caps off a tremendous Superstar Series grouping presented by The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Blakes. Joining Bench on this year's roster is Steve Garvey (July 2); Steve Rogers (July 23); Tom Henke (August 12) and Shawn Green (August 19).
