(Volcanoes Stadium - Keizer, OR) - A three-run double from Volcanoes C Ricardo Genoves in the bottom of the 5th not only opened the scoring on Thursday night - it was enough to sink the Vancouver Canadians who fell 6-1 to Salem-Keizer. The loss was Vancouver's 16th of the season in just 21 games.
Canadians RHP Grant Townsend and Salem-Keizer RHP Kervin Castro were both fantastic on the 4th of July which started with a lengthy on-field pre-game that had a capacity crowd in a festive mood right from the first pitch. Townsend went 4 1/3 innings allowing just three hits while striking out eight. He left the game after giving up a one-out triple to Volcanoes LF Kwon Adkins who would score along with two others shortly after C's reliever RHP Parker Caracci came in and issued a pair of walks and a strikeout before C Ricardo Genoves cleared the bases with the aforementioned double that plated three.
Salem-Keizer starter RHP Kervin Castro was equally if not even more impressive on Thursday going six strong innings of two hit baseball, walking two and striking out four to grab the win as Vancouver could only muster up a lone run in the top of the 9th on a base hit from 3B Trevor Schwecke that scored DH Luis De Los Santos who reached earlier on an error.
Of the four Canadians hits, three of them belonged to 3B Trevor Schwecke who bumped his average to .265 (18-for-68) on the season. The loss went to Townsend (1-2) while Castro improved to 2-1 in front of 5,443 fans out at Volcanoes Stadium.
Notes: Vancouver is now 5-16 (.238) on the season and drops six full games back of Spokane who won on Thursday as there are 17 games remaining in the first half of the season... The run scored by De Los Santos snapped a 20-inning scoreless drought dating back to the 8th inning of Tuesday's game vs. Hillsboro... Vancouver is 0-4 (.000) in the month of July.
Vancouver will play game two of this season in Salem on Friday, July 5th at 6:35pm with RHP Gabriel Ponce getting the ball followed by LHP Juan Diaz on Saturday (July 6). Both games can be heard live on Sportsnet 650.
The Canadians return home to historic Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Sunday, July 7th with a special 5:05pm start time vs. Everett.
