Vancouver takes two-run lead to bottom of 7th before game unravels at feet of Jose Espada & Will McAffer

(Memorial Stadium - Boise, ID) - The only question that will have to be answered is should the Canadians sent starter RHP Jose Espada out for the 7th inning after six dazzling frames that had Vancouver within nine outs of a fifth consecutive series victory. Espada would start the 7th with a walk and a base hit before exiting the game for Will McAffer who struggled for a second straight outing as Boise scored six times en route to a 6-2 series clinching victory.
Espada was outstanding through his first six innings allowing just two hits, striking out seven without allowing a run. It was already his longest outing of the season innings wise and the decision to leave Espada out for the 7th might haunt Canadians manager Dallas McPherson who opted to keep the Puerto Rican right-hander out on the mound when the inning started. Boise's 3B Danny Edgeworth would lead off with a walk and proceed to steal second base before advancing to third base on a single off the bat of C Willie Maciver.
With no one out and runners at second and third base, McPherson went to the bullpen and pulled out North Vancouver native RHP Will McAffer who struck out 1B Daniel Jipping, walked RF Cade Harris to load the bases before striking out LF Aubrey McCarthy to put the game right at it's breaking point. With no one in and the bases loaded with two outs, DH Greg Jones hit a two-run single back up the middle off McAffer to tie the game up which was a tough pill to swallow considering Jones was 1-for-18 (.056) over the past six games.
The game was tied at 2-2 briefly as the very next hitter 2B Kennard MCDowell singled home RF Cade Harris for the game's winning run as Boise would tack on three more to seal the victory and improve to 17-13 (.567) while the Canadians fell back to .500 at 15-15.
The C's will remain in Boise overnight before heading to Tri-City early on Monday morning to open up a three-game series vs. the Dust Devils in a crucial North Division match-up. RHP Randy Pondler (0-3, 4.24) gets the ball for Vancouver in the series opener.
Vancouver Canadians Baseball returns to Nat Bailey Stadium on Thursday, July 19th at 7:05pm as the C's welcome South Division leading Hillsboro for a five-game series that runs through the 23rd with tickets available at www.canadiansbaseball.com, by calling 604.872.5232 or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street, Vancouver, B.C.
