COMSTOCK PARK, MI — The West Michigan Whitecaps had a base runner 90 feet from scoring in five separate innings but couldn't find the big swing when needed, as they fell to the Lake County Captains 4-1 Thursday evening at LMCU Ballpark.

The Whitecaps saw multiple run-scoring opportunities come and go, finishing just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and totaling just two hits in the final five innings in the defeat.

Lake County plated the opening run in the first inning on an RBI single from Maick Collado before a flyout ended a bases-loaded opportunity for the Whitecaps in the bottom half, maintaining the 1-0 Captains lead. Lake County second baseman Nate Furman added an RBI in the second before 'Caps starter Dylan Smith started to cruise - retiring seven straight before reliever Angel Reyes induced a fly ball to end the fifth inning, keeping the deficit at 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, 'Caps second baseman Max Anderson lined a single into left field as Jose Sibrian attempted to round third and score - but was cut down at the plate - ending the inning. The Captains added critical insurance tallies in the seventh and ninth as Lake County outfielder Jonah Advincula plated his first and second RBI of the night - increasing the advantage to 4-1. West Michigan left fielder Dom Johnson scored Roberto Campos on an infield single in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too late, as Captains closer Allan Hernandez recorded the final out - closing the book on a 4-1 Captains win.

Captains starter Parker Messick (1-2) picks up his first win of the season, tossing six scoreless frames with five strikeouts. Smith (0-2) suffers his second loss, giving up two runs through 4.2 innings pitched. Lake County improves to 8-9, while West Michigan falls to 8-10 on the year. The Whitecaps allowed five stolen bases in the loss, with Advincula stealing three of them - setting a new career-high.
