GENEVA, IL - A five-run fifth inning helped the Kane County Cougars beat the West Michigan Whitecaps in front of 9,822 fans Wednesday night at Northwestern Medicine Field by a score of 8-5.
Kane County opened the scoring when Yancarlos Cintron launched a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. The 'Caps proceeded to score the next four runs of the contest, highlighted by a two-run single from Kody Clemens to break a 2-2 tie and take a 4-2 lead. In the fifth, Whitecaps shortstop Cam Warner's throwing error and centerfielder Brock Deatherage lost a fly ball in the evening sky set the table for a tiebreaking three-run home run by Eudy Ramos as part of a five-run Cougars fifth to take a 7-4 lead. The two teams traded runs in the eighth, but the 'Caps dropped the middle game of their three-game set.
Cougars reliever Lane Ratliff (1-1) allowed just one run in three innings of work to ensure his first victory of the season, while 'Caps starter Jesus Rodriguez (5-5) endured a bit of bad luck and allowed seven runs in five innings to take his fifth loss. Breckin Williams pitched a perfect ninth to record his third save of 2018.
The loss sends the Whitecaps overall record to 48-49 this season while sporting a 12-15 mark in the second half. The Cougars up their record to 12-15 in the second half while improving to 47-49 overall. Deatherage led the West Michigan offense with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, RBI and a walk in the defeat.
