MIDLAND, MI — The West Michigan Whitecaps blasted a season-high three home runs to defeat the Great Lakes Loons Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond to win their six-game series, four games to two.

Austin Murr, Danny Serretti, and Luke Gold, the heroes of the day, ignited the West Michigan offense with solo blasts to pace the ‘Caps offense. The home runs from Murr and Serretti were their firsts of the season as the ‘Caps won their first series of the 2024 season.

The Whitecaps scored as soon as possible on Sunday when Austin Murr led off the ballgame with a solo home run, his first of 2024, to give West Michigan the first run of the day. In the bottom of the frame, Kyle Nevin’s run-scoring double off ‘Caps starting pitcher Carlos Marcano tied the contest at one. In the fourth, Serretti blasted his first homer of the year to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead before an RBI-single by catcher Jose Sibrian extended the edge to 3-1. Serretti delivered a run-scoring single an inning later to push the ‘Caps lead to 4-1 before the Loons countered with a run of their own in the fifth, but West Michigan center fielder Roberto Campos made an incredible diving catch with the bases loaded on the Loons Dylan Campbell to save three runs and preserve the West Michigan lead. Izaac Pacheco’s single in the seventh brought home two runs before Luke Gold capped off his fourth-straight three-hit performance with a solo home run in the ninth, his third homer of the series, to conclude the scoring and send the ‘Caps to their first series win in 2024.

Whitecaps relief pitcher Carlos De Los Santos (1-0) picked up the victory despite walking four batters and hitting another in earning his first win of the 2024 season, while Loons righty Christian Romero (1-1) allowed three ‘Caps runs in taking his first loss. The Whitecaps record improves to 7-8 while the Loons fall to 8-7. The Whitecaps collected a season-high 14 base hits and were led by a red-hot Luke Gold throughout the week. Gold finished the series 13-for-22 at the plate with three doubles, three home runs, and eight RBI.
