FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps got behind in two games early and never recovered while being swept in a doubleheader by the Fort Wayne TinCaps to snap their six-game winning streak Sunday at Parkview Field by scores of 8-3 and 6-3.
A six-run fifth inning put the first game of Sunday's doubleheader out of reach for West Michigan, while the 'Caps never recovered from a four-run Fort Wayne first in the nightcap.
In Game One, Jack Suwinski blasted a solo home run in the third before Tirso Ornelas launched a three-run shot as part of the six-run fifth. An inning later, 'Caps first baseman Rey Rivera blasted a solo home run, his fifth of the season as the 'Caps scored three runs in the final two innings of the contest but fell short by a score of 8-3. Brad Bass (4-5) gave up six runs in four innings to take his fifth loss of the season.
In the nightcap, Justin Lopez launched a three-run shot of his own in the first inning to help the TinCaps to a 4-0 lead against Whitecaps pitcher Endrys Briceno (0-1), who took his first loss after giving up five runs in three innings in his first game with the team since 2013. The Whitecaps fall to 38-36 with the sweep, while the TinCaps improve to 34-39 with the pair of victories. Jordan Pearce reached base three times in the first game, while Anthony Pereira collected a pair of hits in the nightcap to head the West Michigan offense.
