COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the third time in West Michigan Whitecaps history, the team boasts both the Midwest League Player and Pitcher of the Week, as outfielder Cam Gibson and pitcher Alfred Gutierrez have simultaneously taken home the honors.
During a stretch where the team posted a 5-1 record between visits to Peoria and Burlington, the two became the first 'Caps duo to concurrently take home the awards since infielder Eugenio Suárez and Tommy Collier in May 2012. The first took place when Bryan Pounds and Luke Putkonen accomplished the feat in June 2009.
Gibson, the son of Detroit Tigers legend and current Fox Sports Detroit analyst Kirk Gibson, hit .385 (10-for-26) with a triple, three home runs, eight RBI and a pair of stolen bases last week. Thus far, the native of Novi, MI has hit .274 with a team-leading five home runs, three doubles, six triples (leads Midwest League) and 14 RBI through 34 games of 2017. The 2015 5th round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers hit a pair of home runs and tallied a Whitecaps individual-best five RBI in the 'Caps 10-5 win at Burlington last Saturday.

Gutierrez, a native of Venezuela, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with six complete frames of shutout baseball without walking a batter and struck out six as part of a 3-1 victory at Peoria on May 10. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 7 games (four starts) this season. In more than 27 innings of work, Gutierrez has walked only one batter and struck out 30. The 21-year old has allowed just 23 hits to hold opponents to a .221 batting average against. The Whitecaps pitching staff has posted the second-best overall ERA (2.55) in the Midwest League.
Coinciding with the honors; the Whitecaps have won 18 of their last 22 games, and are 9-3 during the month of May.
