Myles blasts Mudcats past Dash in 14th inning
ZEBULON, N.C. (July 18, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash could not hold a ninth inning lead and eventually fell 5-2 in 14 innings Thursday night at Five County Stadium on a walk-off three-run homer by Bryson Myles. It was the longest game in innings for Winston-Salem since a 4-3, 14-inning victory over Salem at BB&T Ballpark on August 17, 2010.
Leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, Winston-Salem (12-14, 50-46) sent Cody Winiarski back out after throwing a scoreless eighth frame. Tony Wolters and Joey Wendle started the inning off with consecutive singles, before Winiarski walked Paddy Matera to load the bases. Jerrud Sabourin then came up with a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Winiarski would recover from there to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
The two teams remained tied 2-2 until the bottom of the 14th. After the Dash spoiled an opportunity in the top of the frame, Carolina (12-13, 34-61) put two on with one out against Jason Van Skike (3-3) for Myles. The Mudcats outfielder smashed one just inside the pole down the left field line for a three-run walk-off homer. The homer rewarded reliever Owen Dew (3-5), who tossed three scoreless frames, with this third win of 2013.
Carolina starter Cody Anderson retired the first five he faced in his 19th outing of the season, but with two outs in the second, Jeremy Farrell and Josh Richmond put together consecutive doubles to put Winston-Salem ahead 1-0.
That lead would last until the bottom of the fourth when Matera took Dash starter Jake Cose deep for his third homer to get the Mudcats on the board.
With the game still tied 1-1 in the sixth, Winston would catch a break. Rangel Ravelo made his way aboard with a two-out base hit before moving into scoring position on an Anderson wild pitch. Chris Curley then hit a ground ball toward first that was misplayed by Sabourin and trickled into right field to allow Ravelo to score.
Although the Dash could not hold the lead for Cose, the right-hander turned in his second straight quality start, and fifth since his promotion from Low-A Kannapolis. Cose lasted seven frames, allowing just four hits while walking just one and striking out five.
On the Carolina side, Anderson, who came into the game with the circuit's best ERA among qualified starting pitchers, gave up just one earned run while tossing six innings for his ninth quality start of the campaign for the Muddies.
Game three of this week's four-game series between the Dash and the Mudcats is Friday night at Five County Stadium. Winston-Salem will turn to right-hander Bryan Blough (8-6, 4.47 ERA), while Carolina will counter with southpaw Shawn Morimando (5-9, 3.03 ERA). Winston-Salem will return to BB&T Ballpark on Sunday, July 21 to open up a seven-game homestand with their second All-You-Can-Eat Night of the season.
