WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 1, 2022) — The Winston-Salem Dash tied their series against Aberdeen with a 9-1 win.

Matt Thompson took to the mound looking to build on his string of strong performances. The right-hander, Chicago’s #10 overall prospect, opened his night with three scoreless innings. Aberdeen’s Ignacio Feliz was also locked in early, matching the three scoreless frames.

But in the fourth, Colson Montgomery drew a leadoff walk, which extended his on-base streak to 39 consecutive games. Later in the inning, Bryan Ramos drove a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field, for a 2-run home run to put Winston-Salem ahead 2-0.

After Thompson posted another zero in the bottom of the fourth, the Dash extended their lead in the fifth. Jason Matthews singled and Duke Ellis walked, then Montgomery pulled a single into right field to load the bases. Oscar Colas then jumped on a 1-0 offering and lined it back up the middle and into center field. Matthews and Ellis both scored, to make it a 4-0 game.

Aberdeen did get a run back in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a leadoff home run from Andres Angulo.

Neither side pushed across a run in the sixth or seventh innings. Matt Thompson gave the Dash six strong innings, allowing just one run, one walk, and racking up five punchouts.

In the eighth inning, Adam Hackenberg led off with a double. Tyler Osik promptly singled down the right field line, to plate Hackenberg and give Winston-Salem a 5-1 lead.

Already up four runs, the Dash tacked on more in the ninth. Colson Montgomery picked up his second single of the game, then later an E4 allowed Bryan Ramos to reach base, with Montgomery moving to third base. A Luis Mieses ground out pushed Montgomery across, which made it 6-1 Dash. Later in the frame, Tyler Osik put the game well out of reach with a three run home run to straightaway centerfield.

Chase Plymell, who already put up zeroes in the seventh and eighth innings, shut the door in the ninth to preserve a 9-1 Winston-Salem win. He got his first save, with Matt Thompson earning his third win. Feliz took the loss for Aberdeen, his second of the season.
