Summary

RubberDucks center fielder Will Brennan came within a triple of the cycle and had a career-high six RBIs, and left-hander Logan Allen pitched six innings and struck out six batters, as Akron took a third straight game, 9-1, to earn a series split with the Richmond Flying Squirrels in the finale of a six-game series at The Diamond Sunday afternoon.

Turning Point

Akron took a first-inning lead for the third straight game. Left fielder Julian Escobedo hit his team-high eighth double down the left-field line and went to third base on right-hander Kai-Wei Teng’s wild pitch. With two outs, Brennan hit his eighth double down the left-field line. Designated hitter Bo Naylor hit an RBI single to right field for a 2-0 lead.

Mound Presence

Allen worked around two hits in the first four scoreless innings. He hit a batter to open the fifth inning and allowed a two-out RBI single to second baseman Brett Auerbach before retiring the final four batters of his six-inning start. Right-hander Kevin Kelly pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one batter. Right-hander Kyle Marman pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two walks and two strikeouts.

Duck Tales

The RubberDucks added four runs in the second inning. Catcher Eric Rodríguez hit a leadoff single to center field and advanced on two groundouts, before Escobedo hit a two-out RBI single to left field, right fielder George Valera reached on an error, and Brennan hit a three-run home run to center field for a 6-0 lead. Akron was hitless from the third through eighth innings, but in the ninth, third baseman Victor Nova walked, second baseman José Tena reached on an error, Valera hit a one-out RBI double to left field, and Brennan hit a two-run single to center field to make it 9-1.

Notebook

Escobedo finished the series with eight hits, four doubles and eight RBIs. Brennan finished with seven hits, two doubles, a home run and nine RBIs. Naylor drew eight walks and had four hits for a .600 OBP in the series…First baseman Micah Pries extended a five-game hitting streak (longest active on the club) with a second-inning single…Akron’s nine runs were tied for its third-most in a game this season, and its eight-run victory margin was the second-largest…Akron starting pitchers allowed four runs in 29 2/3 innings in the series (1.21 ERA)…Game Time: 2:28…Attendance: 3,613.
